About Noren
ー
Noren is a traditional Japanese fabric used as a shop sign, partition, and sunshade.
It often features designs and logos, serving as a symbol for those who use it, and has shaped the landscape of Japan.
We carefully select the fabric type, thickness, dyeing methods, and subtle color variations to suit the customer’s specific needs, offering a noren unique to each customer.
A genuine noren made in this way has the power to completely transform the atmosphere by simply changing the noren.

Major Achievements
ー
Chinese Soba Katsumoto
We had the honor of creating the noren and lanterns for Chinese Soba Katsumoto.
Initially, the noren and lanterns produced for their shop, which was carefully designed both inside and out, unfortunately detracted from the overall atmosphere. This led them to find our shop all the way from Tokyo, expressing their desire to create something better.
We used linen fabric and applied dye using the handwritten characters of our skilled artisans. The noren was crafted with chichi (loops) and finished using the Kanto folding method, with the fabric edges neatly triple-folded.
Today, the shop has become so popular that customers line up, and they have expanded to multiple locations.

Gion Hanakyo
We had the privilege of creating the noren for Gion Hanakyo, a Kyoto cuisine restaurant in Gion, Kyoto.
We used handwoven coarse linen fabric, and the characters were handwritten by the head priest of Nanzen-ji Temple. To preserve the authentic atmosphere, we carefully reproduced even the fine details of the brushstrokes and dyed the fabric accordingly.

Daitoku-ji Heiando
We had the honor of creating the noren for Heiando, a lacquerware studio specializing in the restoration and preservation of cultural properties, located to the east of Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto.
To evoke a traditional and solid atmosphere, we used thick No. 5 cotton slub in an undyed natural color. The undyed hue and the distinctive texture of the surface knots express the essence of Japanese aesthetics.
Additionally, to protect the shop interior from the strong afternoon sun, we crafted the noren to match the exterior of the shop. Furthermore, the noren was dyed with extremely high-durability dyes to prevent fading from sunlight. We paid meticulous attention to the craftsmanship to ensure that the noren reflects the careful and precise work of the shop.

SMART
We had the pleasure of creating the noren and sunshade noren for Café Smart, a combined electric vehicle dealership for Smart and café, which opened in Kyoto’s Okazaki district.
For the store’s noren, which expresses a Japanese-modern aesthetic, we used juban tenjiku fabric.
The sunshade noren is made from a water-repellent fabric commonly used in tents, which also has a high level of lightfastness.
Although printed on a black background, ordinary pigments do not adhere well, so we used rubber printing, resulting in a durable finish that won’t easily wear off. Additionally, for ease of use, we added a vent in the center to allow wind to pass through.

Store Noren
A store’s noren is its symbol and a cherished item filled with meaning.
It also plays an important role in enhancing the store’s design and serving as a signboard.
As professionals in noren-making, we consider what we can do for each store and combine over half a century of accumulated knowledge and experience with new ideas to create a noren that you can use with pride.

Noren for Non-Store Use
In addition to noren displayed at stores, we can also create yunoren for use in inns, hotels, and public baths, as well as plain noren for partitions and hand-painted noren for various uses.
Yunoren not only indicate the location of the bath but can also convey a sense of luxury through the weight and texture of the fabric and thoughtful design, allowing customers to feel a sense of expectation and specialness as they pass through.
Hand-painted noren can be used as part of the interior to create a particular atmosphere. They can also be used for purposes like separating the back area of restaurants, as partitions for massage beds, or even as tapestries.
Please feel free to consult us about what kind of image you want to convey or what kind of experience you want to offer your customers.
